Vou continuar pesquisando, claro.

Algo bastante interessante aconteceu ontem no fórum do IL-2.

I was at my home base northwest of Anapa listening to the radio chatter among some mates from a friendly squad. They were escorting Pe-2 bombers to their target, a german airbase some kilometers south (between 50-100) of our base. It was a somewhat long flight but they managed to get near the target without being detected but suddenly all hell broke loose and german fighters jumped on them.

My plane, a Mig-3U was unavailable at the time the strike was launched so I stayed back listening to the mission progress, ready to take off at my airbase. Our planes put up a heroic effort despite being outnumbered. We has two Pe-2's, an I-16 and two P-39's. They reported being engaged by 109's and 190's. By what it seemed the things were quite even in the air, we shot down some, and they were shooting down some... both Pe-2's reached the target and bombed it successfully but we lost one of them and all but one of the fighters. The germans were badly hurt too, most of them were damaged and returned to their shot up base for repairs.

After a couple of minutes the adrenalin began to settle down, I suddenly heard my airbase's anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) firing and seconds later the air raid signal was given! We were under attack! I immediatly ran to my plane to scramble and as I looked up two Bf-109's strafed the field! They were in perfect formation and by now they were already gaining altitude and position for another pass. I ignited my engine and started rolling down the runaway as they strafed again, this time destroying a few fuel tanks close to the hangar line! they missed me! My plane was intact as I left the ground and retracted the landing gear and flaps. I decided to switch over to the enemy radio's frequency only to hear one of them shout: 'A Mig just took off!'

I knew that by now the target was me and I was right! They were diving on me! I had to act quickly, I didn't have enough altitude or speed, they had alot more energy than I did, so I kicked my WEP in and dived to get some speed and turned back in the direction of the field, hoping that it's AAA would help me get rid of one of my pursuers. I was now flying at less than 50 meters high, maybe 10 meters at full throttle! The enemy wouldn't disengage and kept following me and by now they were at their guns max range and began firing!

The enemy leader had two cannons in wing pods. Those babies could rip my delicate Mig apart in no time. I had to get out of that situation quickly otherwise I'd be dead meat! I had a plan by now. When I reached my airfield, I'd do a hammerhead which consists of a steep climb till the plane practically stops and suddenly falls over it's tail back into a nose-down position, just like a hammer. If the enemy were dumb enough to follow me, thinking he could score an easy kill against a motionless plane it would have to go in that climb and become motionless too, an easy prey for the thick AAA based on the field. I'd be exposed for a few seconds but I thought I could jink the aircraft enough not to get hit.

as I approached the field I saved as much energy as I could for the hammerhead and as I passed the center of the filed I yanked my stick back hard and began zooming up in incredible speed! As I looked back I noticed my two pursuers were still in my tail and climbing with me! They felt for it, now I could only hope those AAA gunners were in their best mood today! As I approached the peek, the enemy opened up and I could see the tracers passing by. I could only think of cutting the engine, extending flaps and kicking the rudder, that made me stop faster and they climbed past me in a classic overshot! My hammerhead was complete and I went back to full throttle, flaps retracted and began diving for some speed again and just as I looked back to check on the enemy position I saw one of them being ripped in half by the AAA! The plan worked!

There was only one left now and without his leader with his big guns, this guy decided to recover from the dive and head home where he could get help if he needed so. But I was decided not to let him escape. I don't know what went through his mind but this guy was flying straight and level, still at high speed but he wasn't moving a finger, I even got suspicious and as I was approaching from his six, I began looking around to see if this guy had any other friends I should be aware of... but none.

I was comming in really fast and that guy was growing on my sights... and finally at 300 meters I opened up... the first time my guns were fired that day... and I was making hits! He finally realized I was behind him and jinked away. Now his tail section was full of holes, but I wasn't satisfied, that guy could still get home easily, I went after him, ready to take 'im out by all means. He jinked some more and I was with him... he dived, I dived, he turned, I turned, he climbed and I climbed. Every now and then I'd give him a burst, almost all of them hit the enemy plane and finally I was able to give him a deflection shot in his engine and he began smoking.

With a bad engine, holes in his tail and wings, he couldn't maintain altitude much longer and soon went down to the deck and I was after him. I patiently waited for the perfect shot and it came as he was trying to brake hard right, I ripped his wing off and saw him dive down to a violent death on impact with the ground.

After a small patrol to check if there weren't any follow-up attacks, I went back to the field where I performed a normal landing. The damage to the field were minimum, only those fuel tanks were destroyed. This was a lost mission that was won because of fast tactical thinking.

I wish I had any screenshot of that one! Sweet mission ain't it? Those two 109 jocks had it all and were experienced dudes! I just added the "Hammerhead over Friendly Field" to my book of effective maneuvers as I have used it twice and both times with very successfull results.

Will write more later, gotta finish some work I was doing.
